About the Course

The Science of Gemcutting course combines traditional gemological knowledge with the advanced understanding of optics required for gemstone design and optimization. The course was written as compliment to our Cutting and Recutting for Gem Business course but can be enjoyed by anyone in the gem and gemcutting trade who wants to dive deeper into the physical world of gemcutting.

This course will cover advanced optics that haven’t been previously presented; software design, design aesthetics (with a historic and scientific analysis of 25 classic cuts), along with an extensive exploration of color and how the cutter can manipulate and master it through cut design.

The course will utilize the CAD software GemCutStudio to teach students how to design their own cuts as well as modifying and optimizing pre-existing cuts.  Not only will students learn HOW to design gem cuts from scratch but they will learn WHY different cuts help or hurt the color and brightness of a stone as well as WHAT each of the traditional cutting styles does for light and dark toned stones.

This course is offered as a distance learning course for advanced gemcutting and gemology students. It’s presented over four 3-hour distance learning sessions that are organized as follows:

  • Day 1: Software Design Foundations
  • Day 2: Design Theory
  • Day 3: Advanced software and Polish sequences 
  • Day 4 : Color and Cutting

Course Outline

  • How to use GemCutStudio software from scratch
  • How to design symmetrical and non-symmetrical gemstone designs
  • How to modify and optimize existing design in GemCutStudio
  • How to reverse engineer a design from a physical stone or drawing
  • How to use software to plan and execute recuts 
  • How to understand the pro’s and cons of design with an analysis of 25 popular gem designs
  • How to use special features to improve a cut
  • How to use Crown Height and Pavilion Angles to improve your designs
  • How to improve your cutting and polishing sequences to improve speed and polishing quality
  • How to improve color through polishing
  • How to improve the face-up color in pleochroic stones
  • How to recut with color zoning

Prerequisites

  • English Language Proficiency
  • A Gemology background is helpful
  • An understanding of the process of gemcutting is helpful
  • A computer with internet and the Zoom teleconferencing software

Additional Costs
The tuition fee for IGT classes includes everything you need to complete the course including a variety of tools to use in the class as well as a price of gem rough for cutting that is yours to take home. Students are encouraged to bring their own loupe if they have one that they prefer.

Tuition fee does not include 7% VAT.
